The political landscape in Nigeria is buzzing with speculation following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) announcement of 110 new applications for political party registrations, submitted as of Monday, June 23, 2025.
Among the standout names on the list are the Obidient Peoples Party (OPP), Progressive Obedients Party (POP), and Obedients Peoples Party (OBP), which have been linked to supporters of Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate whose “Obidient” movement galvanized a youthful electorate in the 2023 elections.
The INEC list, released earlier today, has ignited a firestorm of debate, particularly around the involvement of the Obidient movement—a grassroots initiative that has distanced itself from these registration attempts.
According to a statement from INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the commission is processing all applications impartially, adhering to the stringent requirements outlined in Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution. These include submitting detailed documentation and meeting administrative fees, with a 30-day window to rectify any deficiencies.
Obidient movement has distanced itself from the drama, but yet to disown the OPP.
Analysts are suggesting, it is opposition at work and a plot to make it impossible to register the coalition vehicle, All Democratic Alliance ahead of 2027 Presidential Elections.
