A video that has gone viral online shows a Nigerian pastor refusing a 30 Naira offering from a passenger, arguing that the amount disrespects God. The incident, captured during a preaching session in a vehicle, has sparked a fierce debate across social media platforms about the ethics of religious offerings and the economic realities faced by many Nigerians.
The video shows the pastor, approaching a woman seated in a car who attempted to hand him the small sum. He refused the offering, stating that 30 Naira was insufficient and implied a lack of respect for divine reverence. “You wouldn’t use 30 Naira to buy an iPad or anything valuable, yet you think it’s acceptable to offer it to God,” he was heard saying, before declaring that both he and God were rejecting the offering.
The backlash has been swift and varied. Many Nigerians have expressed outrage, viewing the pastor’s actions as an overreach and a sign of greed.
“This is not about God; it’s about money,” said Chika Nwosu, a 34-year-old civil servant from Abuja. “People give what they can, and to reject such a small amount is to ignore the economic realities many face.”
Others, however, have defended the pastor, arguing that the intent behind offerings is as important as the amount. “It’s not just about the money; it’s about the heart,” commented Adeola Adebayo, a 45-year-old teacher from Ibadan. “If you’re giving out of obligation rather than genuine faith, then it’s understandable why it might be rejected.”
